Best Foldable Treadmills for Apartments, Basements and Small Workout Spaces

When you don't have that much room to store exercise equipment, working out at home can be a challenge. Folding treadmills and other space-saving machines aim to make your life easier (and healthier)!

There are a number of benefits that are provided through cardio workouts such as, weight loss, heart and lungs strength, less stress, better sleep, increases in bone density, a lower risk for heart disease and some cancers, and just generally feeling better about yourself overall. Using a treadmill is a great way to get a cardio workout in without having to worry about the weather and, in many cases, even leave your home.

Sometimes though, we don’t have the space it takes to house a big treadmill at home, such as with small apartments or a home that lacks a basement. But with foldable treadmills, that issue is no longer a problem.

A foldable treadmill can typically be stored with the ramp tilted vertically upright against the handlebars, and therefore doesn’t take up much space when it's not in use. Not all foldable treadmills are the same though, so it’s important to choose the one that is best for your individual needs.

What should I look for in a foldable treadmill?

Space-saving treadmills aren't created equally. Here are some things to bear in mind when shopping for a treadmill that folds up:

Wheels and weight: Plan out where you will be putting your foldable treadmill while you are using it, as well as when you are not. If you will be moving it from one place to another between use and non-use (e.g. stashing it in the closet), you will want to look for a foldable treadmill option that has wheels so it’s easy to move. You should consider the total weight of the machine to know if you will be able to move it safely

Hydraulic lift systems: When you fold or unfold the treadmill, you may need some assistance to do so. Some foldable treadmills have hydraulics that will do the work for you, making it so that you don’t damage your machine by slamming it down or injure yourself lifting it up. Some treadmills can be quite heavy, so the weight is uncomfortable for you to handle it's important to look for one with a hydraulic lift assistance system.

Footprint: The footprint of the treadmill refers to how much space (length, width, and height) it takes up. Treadmills with a large belt and frame will have a larger footprint. It's important to check the measurements for when the treadmill is folded and unfolded so you know if it will fit where you plan to keep it. Some foldable treadmills can be folded down flat to fit under a bed, while some can only be stored in a standing position.

Other space saving features to consider:

  • Check the deck size to make sure it will fit your needs. If you're a runner, you will need a longer and wider deck than if you are only planning on using it for walking.
  • Smaller motors are used in some foldable treadmills. Again, if you're a runner, check to make sure that it has the horsepower to keep up with you.
  • Some models that are designed to save space will come without some of the traditional treadmill features to make them smaller (e.g. water bottle holders) so consider what features are most important to you.
